History

W.A.L.C was founded by Mrs Mandy Day in 1998  under the guidance of the Federation of Disability Sports Organisation and the National Autistic Society . Later that year it was transferred officially to club status and the Wakefield Autism Leisure Club was born.

Over the years it has grown and we now offer other sports and activities, and the club has naturally progressed to include young people with other learning disabilities/difficulties.

We participate in various sporting activities both locally and regionally, these include football, swimming, crown green bowling, indoor bowls, boccia and indoor Kurling. Other sports include table tennis and indoor hockey.

W.A.L.C. has forged ties with the Special Olympics GB organisation which allows our athletes to participate in sporting activities on a regional, national and world basis. Our athletes are registered to Special Olympics and train in their chosen sport with us all year round. Through Special Olympics some of our footballers had the opportunity to participate in the world games in China. This was a tremendous achievement for them and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Currently W.A.L.C. is run by a part time paid club coordinator, 3 sports coaches and a small army of volunteers and voluntary committee members.  As the club has registered charity status we are required to have a written constitution and at least three trustees. We have qualified coaches running each of our sessions who are all DBS qualified.
